{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body
"On lap three, safety personnel were informed and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send marshals were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was shown in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what happened subsequent to that time"
