The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously flexible, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
