Rare Crimson Electrical Discharge Recorded in the Heavens

A group of photography enthusiasts based in the island nation have successfully captured photographs of “red sprites”, one of the rarest atmospheric displays in the world, where bright red bursts become visible in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

This group of artists began their evening to shoot the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the lower part of the country on a specific autumn evening, and unexpectedly witnessed the rare phenomenon.

They thought they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that evening, but their shooting session became “a night to remember,” one photographer stated.

“He was checking his images for a galaxy composite and discovered he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer said. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the night.”

Explaining Red Sprites

Red sprites are electrical discharges in the mesosphere, caused by thunderstorms. Differing from traditional lightning that aims at the earth, the phenomena shoot upwards towards the higher altitudes, producing structures that are similar to columns, tapered shapes or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a red sprite was captured – by chance – in the late eighties, by a team at the a academic organization.

Fleeting and Otherworldly Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are rarely visible to the naked eye, but an individual was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing straight toward a sprite when it happened – an ideal happenstance looking at the correct area of the firmament and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he said.

Witnessing the events was a aspiration for this individual, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It seems that you’re seeing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … there is an intense scarlet hue that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to witness.”

Advanced and Creative Mastery

Photographing a this phenomenon demands a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an knowledge about atmospheric physics and creative flare, the photographer said. “It’s a really involved form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”

Another photographer remarked it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I was able to observe the galactic band shining above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of light danced above a thunderstorm far on the horizon,” he said.

A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no other images depicting scarlet electrical bursts and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.

“It represented a unique instance when you know you’re witnessing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
