Youth Discovered Deceased After Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage boy was found dead just days after being falsely accused of taking the cremated remains of a dead infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Tragic Finding
The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Accusations Begin
The inquest heard how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication stated: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my flat."
In a statement read to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Police Investigation
An investigation report from police later concluded the supposed burglary victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was not taken in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Health Impact
She added that Kai had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a police station and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had not reached out to the family by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could use the toilet whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Online Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The inquest heard that a 19-year-old encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest heard from educational personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some students discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang Kai's family landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Lead coroner informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his interview he was freed while inquiries continued."
The official concluded: "There is no evidence that the acts or failures of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is impossible to discern his purpose."
